Millicent Kyerema

THE STORY OF MILLICENT KYEREMA

Millicent Kyerema has a pathetic story to tell, she hails from Bormah, a village near Tepa in the Ashanti region of Ghana, and was born on the 13th of June 1985, but lost both parents and lived with other relatives before moving to Kumasi to start a trade at an early age. She couldn’t complete Junior High School, she had to drop out after JSS1 because of financial difficulties. She then moved to Krofrom (CPC), and rented an apartment for herself, her daughter, and her niece.

One evening after work, as she tried covering her goods with plastic, she felt dizzy and sat down to recover from the dizziness. All of a sudden she started feeling a sharp pain in one arm. The pain later affected her other arm. Some friends assisted her to the SDA hospital. And on the way the pain became unbearable as she felt it rising to her shoulders. At the hospital her condition was diagnosed as diabetes, which she did not have before. A few days after being hospitalized, her arm developed some blisters, and later started going bad. The doctors referred her to Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and within one month, her arms had to be amputated to save her life. She said she lost both arms in 2016.

Since 2016 she has not been able to trade again, and is supported by her church (Church of Christ) and other well-wishers. She is assisted by her daughter, a second year SSS day student and a young niece. She is a single parent. She says her marriage hit the rocks just three months after the birth of her daughter.

OUR DESIRE TO SUPPORT HER
REGAIN LIMBS TO BE SELF RELIANT

Imagine having pain in your hands, or having one of your hands amputated, and just imagine the worse scenario when your two hands are amputated for a mysterious cause, what a tragedy it will be. And now let us look at what Millicent went through, that unexpectedly you finish your days’ work at your work place and you begin to feel dizzy and weakness in the body and within twinkle of an eye you find yourself in the hospital bed. This is what happened to her and within few days as the hands continue to change from blisters to burns and moving upwards towards the elbow the doctors had no choice but to take action to safe her her life. Can you imagine the shock and the deep trauma she will experience?

The fact that she is no more having the freedom of using the hands, consider the challenges in everyday life, how to bath herself, and how to eat. As a good Samaritan made an appeal to the Galaxy Family Basket, we listened to her story carefully and with deep sympathy and empathy we had series of meetings to study how best we can help her to at least regain some normalcy and that is to help her the get a functional prosthetics which will enable her to work and feed herself. We belief that we can organise good will fundraising to make this vision come through.

Indeed, the circumstances of life often unfold in ways that can seem mysterious and unpredictable. Many factors, including choices we make, external events, and unseen forces, influence our paths. This mysterious nature invites us to embrace curiosity, openness, and a sense of wonder about the unfolding of our lives. It encourages us to appreciate the interconnectedness of events and the potential for growth and learning in every experience. Embracing this mystery can lead to a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us, fostering resilience and a greater sense of purpose in navigating life's journey.
